IBC Retrospective: KIT’s Double Whammy
KIT digital walked away from IBC with an unbeaten record, winning both the IBC Innovation Award and the CSI (Cable and Satellite International) Award. The XBox app that KIT created for Channel 4’s 4oD video-on-demand service received the prestigious IBC Innovation Award on Sunday night. The app app extends 4oD to the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console and leverages the Xbox Kinect’s Voice andNatural User Interfaces, allowing users to browse and choose video content using intuitive gesture and voice control. On Friday, our white label Social Program Guide product beat out three other finalists to garner the CSI Award for Best Social TV Technology, Service or Application. The Social Program Guide or SPG is a second screen app that is a mash-up of an EPG and a remote control with an overlay of social functionality. Because the product is owned by the network operator, the SPG provides the unique ability to change the channel directly from the app, so that users can … Continue reading
KIT digital’s Social Program Guide Shortlisted for the CSI Awards
We are proud to announce that KIT digital’s Social Program Guide (SPG) has been shortlisted for the CSI Awards in the Best Social TV technology, service or application category. The SPG is a white label, second screen solution for network operators that is essentially a mash-up of the remote control and the electronic program guide, with an overlay of social functionality to aid in the discovery process. This allows viewers to enjoy a full range of social TV functions, as well as change the channel, all through a single intuitive interface. Served through KIT digital’s Cosmos Video Platform, the SPG also boasts support for cloud-based DVR functionality, seamless VOD store integration, and multiple e-commerce models and ad serving for advanced content monetization. The SPG was introduced to critical acclaim at this year’s National Association of Broadcasters show. We are especially pleased to be shortlisted this year as it marks the 10th anniversary of the CSI awards which were first launched … Continue reading
TV 3.0 Summit at the Paley Center
One of the signs of a really good conference is that you actually walk away with the feeling that you’ve learned something. Which I why I’m glad I went over the Paley Center yesterday for the TV 3.0 Summit sponsored by The Media Council and Broadcasting and Cable. The TV industry is reeling from all the digital changes. Not necessarily in a bad way, but everything is happening pretty fast and furious and, as Discovery CEO David Zaslav noted in his interview with CNBC’s Becky Quick, no one really knows what’s coming next. One of the themes was a recent article by Henry Blodgett proclaiming the death of the television industry. Irwin Gottlieb, Chairman and CEO of WPP’s Group M had the most blunt assessment as he told CNN’s Erin Burnett, “with all due respect to him… he’s totally wrong. One should never do ‘sample-of-one’ research” Gottlieb’s analysis was spot on: Blodgett’s analysis was based on his own NASCAR Blindness. … Continue reading
It’s A Hit: Press Around Our New KIT Social Program Guide
We’ve been getting a lot of great press around our new Social Program Guide and wanted to share some highlights. Lost Remote, the white-hot Social TV site, was first out of the box with a lengthy article by lead writer Natan Edelsburg, who cited the ability to instantly see the which friends are watching which shows as his favorite feature. Beet.tv, whose Andy Plesser has made a name for himself as the tech world’s leading interviewer, filmed a great in-depth with KIT Global COO Alex Blum, where they discussed the social program guide and KIT near term roadmap. Mari Silbey reviewed the app for ZatzNotFunny, the ultimate TV industry insider blog. Silbey, formerly Chief Blogger at Motorola, was impressed by the SPG’s ability to provide unique accounts for each family members and the option to limit social activity to a companion second screen device. To see it in action, check out our demo video. For more details, visit our Social … Continue reading

NAB For Newbies: Tips & Tricks
NAB can be a daunting experience for newcomers. To help, we put together this list of tips from some old NAB hands. At The Hotel Bring Cash – ATMs in Las Vegas tend to charge excessively high fees Travel in Packs – With mammoth taxi lines snaking around the LVCC, it can take hours of standing in the hot Vegas sun just to catch a ride back to your hotel. Grab 4-5 co-workers or friends and flag down a limo instead. (You can usually find them by the taxi line.) Splitting the fare lets you get to your destination with minimal cash and maximum style. Stay Hydrated – keep in mind that Las Vegas is in the middle of the desert. The air inside the show is very cool and dry and it’s often hot inside. Always carry water with you in your bag so you’re not walking around the show parched and grumpy. Be a Smarter Networker – Pack a … Continue reading

Was the 2012 Super Bowl a Social TV Success?
As we predicted, the 2012 Super Bowl proved to be one of the biggest social TV events of the year. However, it could have been far more impressive if brands had done a better job connecting their commercials with their social media campaigns. Research group Altimeter was disappointed by the fact that 32% of advertisements didn’t include references to brand websites or social media sites. There were also some campaigns that required viewers to spend too much time thinking about how to navigate through processes to activate perks. According to ReadWriteWeb, “…only six ads used hashtags in lieu of a Website or social media site, but those ads were notable because they did not ask viewers to like them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. Instead, they asked for viewer interaction.” The entertainment check-in service GetGlue claims there were over 160K Super Bowl check-ins on their service alone, which went up 700% compared to the 2011 Super Bowl. Lora … Continue reading

Super Bowl with a Second Screen
The rapid adoption of viewing live TV in tandem with a “second screen” device is bound to make the 2012 Super Bowl the biggest social TV events of the year. As a matter of fact, every major Super Bowl commercial has a social TV component. We think this is the right approach: 30-second commercial slots can’t stand alone, and advertising campaigns should go social. Music app Shazam is making all the right moves for the Super Bowl. They made headlines last year upon the launch of Shazam for TV. This year, they will power nearly a third of all Super Bowl advertisements. With over 175 million users (60 million in the U.S,) Shazam is considered one of the driving forces behind second screen interactive television. TV check-in service GetGlue, in comparison, is 2 million strong. Shazam, along with other major media companies, is relying on viewers to use their phones to interact with commercials for more than catching up with the … Continue reading
Postponement of SOPA/PIPA
The true power of the social web was demonstrated through the postponement of the SOPA and PIPA bills. These directly affect search engines, blogs, social media platforms, and many other services. There were site-wide blackouts, protests, and countless calls and faxes made to government officials. The New York Times labeled the movement against these bills as “a political coming of age for a relatively young and disorganized industry that has largely steered clear of lobbying and other political games in Washington.” We at KIT digital found ourselves between a rock and a hard place, but the online activism was very awe-inspiring, especially as people used their creativity to express their views, such as the image below: Wikipedia had a 24-hour blackout, making their pages unavailable while featuring a message detailing their opposition to SOPA. According to Wikipedia, over 162 million people saw their message during their blackout, and 8 million people used their search tool to find the contact information of their elected representatives. Over 4.5 million people signed … Continue reading

2012 CES Marked Beginning of a New Era in Video
KIT Digital was proud to be in the midst of over 150K attendees at the 2012 CES, because of all the buzz surrounding Social TV, connected devices, and video news. These innovations are sure to dominate tech headlines in a matter of weeks. The highlights we were looking forward to, such as the OLED and 3D TVs, turned out to be amongst the major hits of CES. Two models of OLED TV’s, from LG and Samsung were on display, and sparked interest because they don’t require a backlight- which results in a thin frame, and a superior color palette. Let’s not forget the mention of quicker response times, and wider angles for viewing! We covered additional innovations in TV user experiences here. Many also agreed with our mention of developers wowing the world with their innovations in convergence of mobile devices. An increasing number of viewers watch television with a laptop, tablet, or a mobile device either with them, or … Continue reading
Between a Rock and a Hard Place: The Challenges of the SOPA Discussion
What a day yesterday has been in this curious world that has whipped content makers, technologists and the US House of Representatives into a frenzy of passionate conflict. At KIT digital, we’re a bit stuck in the middle. On the one hand, many of our clients invest tens of millions of dollars into creating and distributing the worlds best content, and their investment ought to be protected by laws that stop and punish those who steal that content. Because make no mistake, stealing is what it is. Of course, on the other hand, anyone can see that the SOPA/PIPA bill suffers from a lack of technical insight from the US Congress as well as a more basic disregard for many principles inherent in this lofty idea that all of us believe in, the “free internet”. In a nutshell, this is a bill that was created in the name of ‘prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation.’ SOPA grants the U.S government and … Continue reading
Developers Impress at 2012 CES with Innovations in Convergence
Tablets were the rage at the 2011 CES, which led to developers scurrying on to develop the next big thing for the ever-growing tablet segment. This year, the convergence of mobile devices with TV is clearly one of the most predominant themes. We are keeping tabs on this trend, as we consistently seek ways to add to our Connected Device Framework. One of the biggest surprises was Linux entering the TV market with Ubuntu TV. The controls are touch, and gesture based, and smartphones can be used as a remote as well. In addition to intelligent search, and streaming capabilities, Ubuntus cloud will be built into their new TV. This means users can enjoy the programs that are stored on other devices. Developers are very well aware of how smartphones are changing the way users consume information, and their tweaks on mobile operating systems are significantly changing how that content is delivered. For example, Myriads launch of Alien Vue (Android … Continue reading
Innovations in TV User Experience Dominate CES Buzz
The complexities that come with most standard remote controls are unnecessary, and ridiculously outdated. Think about it: how many buttons does your TV remote have? Better yet, how many remotes are you using in the first place? The launch of Xbox Kinect (which allows users to control their TV using gesture and voice), along with rumors circulating that Apple will bring Siri to an Apple TV have dominated the discussion to date. But others are getting in on the action. Lenovo is demonstrating some serious innovation with their K91 Smart TV, running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). This is on show at CES 2012 and we’ll be watching carefully to see whether this could be a future device to integrate into our Connected Device Framework. The other interesting thing about the K91 is that in another sign of the growing importance of Asian markets to consumer electronics manufacturers, the Lenovo TV will launch in China. Much has changed in the … Continue reading
CES Highlights We Are Looking Forward To
CES 2012 opens today in Las Vegas. Here are four things we’re excited to see which aim to take the in-home TV experience to levels never seen before. This is only good news for KIT, as we’re working with many of the worlds biggest media companies helping them to transform living rooms all over the world: LG 84” 4K 3D TV- These beauties will offer close to 4 times the resolution of traditional 1080p, which would make your visual experience at home far more closer to the likes of cinema quality. The resolution will be 3,840 x 2,160. And oh yes, there will also be the updated Magic Motion Remote Control, which includes voice recognition, gestures, and a scroll wheel. World’s Largest OLED TV- Techies will rejoice seeing a teaser of this LG 4-mm thick panel at CES, which boasts having “the most natural colors of any TV set” at a “much lower price point” in comparison to other OLEDs … Continue reading

We are tipping that the buzz around Connected TV’s will reach fever-pitch at CES this year, with media companies and device manufacturers scrambling to offer TV services directly on these ever-popular new TV’s. The company is awarding $225,000 in cash and prizes to winning developers for innovative multimedia apps. The challenge is now in its second year, and the finalists are truly breaking multimedia ground! The winner will be announced at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The Three Stages of Social TV
This is the first of a three-part series by Alan Wolk, our Managing Director of Social Strategy, on emerging consumer behaviors around multiscreen television. It originally appeared in DigiDay Daily. Social media might just be the best thing that’s happened to TV. While you probably think all that tweeting and Facebooking is tearing us away from the flat screen, it’s actually making TV programming even more powerful. Social TV is a hot trend nowadays. Everyone has an opinion; only there’s a tendency to lump any and every TV-related interaction under the banner of “social television.” There are, however, actually three distinct stages of the TV-watching experience: deciding, watching and reviewing, all of which feed off each other in a circular rather than linear pattern. In this article, I’ll concentrate on deciding. In subsequent articles, I’ll address what it means for watching and reviewing. The first part of any TV-viewing experience is always going to be “what should we watch?” And much … Continue reading

Webinar: Strategies for Delivering Video to Tablets & Mobile Devices
Consumption of broadband-delivered video is climbing sharply as consumers choose video on-demand (VOD) versus scheduled programming. Longer work days, more travel, and a proliferation of devices that enable ubiquitous access to broadband networks anywhere, anytime are driving this demand. Research from The Diffusion Group (TDG) predicts that by 2020 the consumption of broadband video — content stored and distributed over an open IP architecture — will surpass the consumption of traditional broadcast TV programming. Watch Streaming Media’s free webinar to learn the best strategies and practices to get started delivering your videos to connected IP devices.

KIT digital team has successful week at MIPTV!
I can’t think of a better way to start at KIT digital than land in sunny Cannes for MIPTV. I was immediately struck by the focus of the team, in/out of the booth. I was equally impressed by the quality of our many conversations involving prospects from all around Europe, ASIAPac and North America – GLOBAL is really the word, as exemplified by this interesting article from Dailystar, which you can click here to read. Always great seeing a prospect trying to pitch you what they’d like to see, which is what you offer! As the whole crew prepared to brave 20h+ driving back to Prague, the spirits stayed high, and focused on the many critical follow ups.. I’m already thinking about next weeks … Continue reading
Listen to KIT digital's webinar exploring what the iPad means for business communications and video content consumption
On April 7th, KIT digital & the Business Development Institute hosted a webinar titled “The iPad: A Fourth Screen or Just Another Device? The Impact of Tablet Computers for Business Communications” where we attempted to answer the question what does the newly released Apple device mean for business communications and video content consumption. The webinar was presented by online media thought leaders: Steve Rubel, SVP, Director of Insights from Edelman Digital; Chris Hazelton, Research Director, Mobile & Wireless, The 451 Group and our own Frank Weiler who is an expert on mobile video solutions at KIT digital. While the webinar attacked the question of what the entrance of tablet devices into every day computing experiences means from broad angles, it was clear that a general consensus on the importance of this change in IT landscape has been reached. HTML5 format, feverishly discussed in media weeks prior to the launch of the iPad, was addressed during the webinar. Frank Weiler elaborated … Continue reading

KIT digital To Hold Webinar- The iPad: A Fourth Screen or Just Another Device? The Impact of Tablet Computers for Business Communications
Wed April 7th 2010 at 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM EDT The recent launch of Apple’s iPad has generated a wide range of opinions and some confusion when trying to answer the question, “What is the iPad?”. It has been described as an “iPod Touch on steroids” and the “ultimate electronic reader”. This webinar will specifically focus on answering the question of how the iPad and tablet devices in general will impact business communications including IP video. At the first glance, the iPad seems to come as a replacement for an old fashioned clipboard, opening up new opportunities for interactivity with its large, mobile screen. Will it become a new employee training tool, a corporate communications device or a revolutionary media consumption gadget? Is it a true 4th screen or just a version of its mobile predecessors? Speakers: Chris Hazelton, Research Director, Mobile & Wireless, The 451 Group Steve Rubel, SVP, Director of Insights, Edelman Digital Frank Weiler, Head of Business … Continue reading

The workshop was a great success as we spent three focused days bringing these key initiatives to life and members of our global sales team have come out of the workshop with a better understanding of how the KIT digital VX-one platform can be (and is currently being) used to drive value for customers in our five industry verticals, as well as key VX-one collateral which includes brochures, demo videos, product sheets, etc. to support this effort. The room was filled with excitement as Andy Steward, KIT’s Chief Technology Officer demonstrated several of the ‘next generation’ capabilities of VX-one, a platform that the company expects will revolutionize the IP video industry. KIT digital gathers 53 key team members in Cairo for our 2nd Biannual Sales Summit
As the KIT digital global business has expanded in the last 6 months, there has been an even greater need to sit in the same room and compare notes from the IP-video space around the world. And so late last month we held our second biannual sales summit in Cairo. We chose Cairo because we have a sizable (20+ professionals) operation there, yet it’s a place few of our team members have visited. The opportunity to meet and spend time with the KIT Cairo team members was invaluable. The summit focused on the next phase of the IP-video revolution and the ongoing integration of our global sales and customer service teams. For me, it was a series of firsts! Recently joining the KIT digital team as Global Communications Manager (my first day on the job actually being the first day of the summit), it was great to meet such a passionate group of people, all of whom have a perspective … Continue reading

KIT digital @ MIPCOM 2009: Press Coverage
This year’s MIPCOM conference was an exciting event for our team. Our efforts did not go unnoticed by the press. Video Age published a front page article exploring the growing trend in IPTV for the living room. Our president, Gavin Campion was interviewed for the article stressing four key points that traditional broadcasters should hear: IPTV… makes content cheap to distribute massivel increases available population makes it easy to monetize content opens up new market for distribution Our CEO’s participation in the Catch-Up TV Panel was also well received. MIPCOM News reported on the event and made a point highlighting Kaleil’s point about the future of Catch-Up TV:
KIT digital @ MIPCOM 2009: Tuesday and Wednesday prove to be busier than ever.
Our second day at the MIPCOM conference in Cannes was a busy one! Even though we have a bigger team here than ever, we’ve been incredibly busy raising awareness for the industry in a market so classically dominated by traditional digital technologies. Tuesday marked the renewal of our relationship with The Associated Press who use our Digital Junction module to manage, syndicate and deliver video news content. For those not able to attend our CEO’s panel on Catch-Up TV on Wednesday at MIPCOM, you will be able to view the video on this blog in a few days.
